No Travel Ban, America is Open for Ebola
Bureaucracies protect and hide the incompetent. – Joseph Heller
Bureaucracy – the giant power wielded by pygmies. – Honore de Balzac
How does a nation go about protecting its citizens from heinous and potentially fatal viruses that originate outside of its borders? Maybe secure its borders? Maybe secure its airports? Maybe prevent people from the affected countries from entering its territory? No, none of these things have been deemed by your federal government (fedgov) and POTUS as viable solutions to prevent Ebola from continuing to afflict Americans. What is their solution?
The fedgov bureaucrats have decided that the best way to prevent Ebola is to provide additional screening at U.S. airports for travelers entering the U.S. from West Africa. What are the additional screening measures the bureaucrats have devised? The federal government, specifically the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), has decided that bureaucrats armed with thermometers and papers should do the trick. I couldn’t make this stuff up if I tried.
The CDC has reported that CDC staff members will go to specific airports to assist Customs and Border Patrol personnel in screening travelers from West Africa. The following is the screening protocol straight from the CDC’s website:
· Travelers from Guinea, Liberia, and Sierra Leone will be escorted by CBP to an area of the airport set aside for screening.
· Trained CBP staff will observe them for signs of illness, ask them a series of health and exposure questions and provide health information for Ebola and reminders to monitor themselves for symptoms. Trained medical staff will take their temperature with a non-contact thermometer.
· If the travelers have fever, symptoms or the health questionnaire reveals possible Ebola exposure, they will be evaluated by a CDC quarantine station public health officer. The public health officer will again take a temperature reading and make a public health assessment. Travelers, who after this assessment, are determined to require further evaluation or monitoring will be referred to the appropriate public health authority.
· Travelers from these countries who have neither symptoms/fever nor a known history of exposure will receive health information for self-monitoring.
The Bureaucrats are out there armed with thermometers and papers – I feel safer already.
It looks like the fedgov bureaucrats are using the same honor system it used for the illegal immigrants it chose to spread across the U.S.; catch and release (fine for fishing, but not for criminals and deadly viruses). How has this system worked for illegal immigrants? It hasn’t, with approximately 90 percent of the illegals failing to report for their court hearings – weird. I wonder how many of the travelers from West Africa will answer the CDC questionnaire honestly? I am going to guess, zero. In all fairness, the potential Ebola carriers will be armed with pamphlets from the CDC that provide information on self-monitoring, so everything should go well. The obvious question is: What if a traveler from West Africa is not exhibiting any signs or symptoms of Ebola at the designated screening airports, but develops Ebola at a later date, after he or she has already exposed hundreds if not thousands of Americans to Ebola? No big deal, the CDC is on top of it.
I’m sure the CDC will handle the airport screenings as well as it handled the second nurse who contracted Ebola after caring for the Liberian man who was treated for Ebola at a hospital in Dallas. This would be the nurse the CDC gave permission to fly to Cleveland a few days after providing care to the aforementioned Ebola carrier. To make matters worse, the CDC allowed her to get on a return flight to Dallas with a high fever. The nurse is currently being treated for Ebola.
